Indu Lnu, CEM, LEED-AP, University Energy Officer at University at Albany will discuss their 4-week Winter Intersession Energy Initiative. Since most students are out during the long break, the University implements a two-phased shutdown procedure to save energy and costs. The University has saved over $1 million from this initiative. However, it involves significant planning, coordination, buy-in, and extensive workforce power to make it happen. The discussion will focus on the establishment of the initiative and the annual implementation process and procedures. Indu will discuss the hurdles to implementation ranging from technical limitations to complaints from inconvenienced occupants.

Indu Lnu, CEM, LEED-AP, University Energy Officer, at University at Albany will discuss their High Performance Building Guidelines for new construction, major renovation, and gut rehab projects. The guidelines provide minimum energy and sustainability goals for energy efficiency, water efficiency, commissioning, renewable energy, measurement and verification, LEED targets, energy and carbon modeling, and occupant education. Indu will also discuss the composition of the team that helped develop the guidelines and the process it followed to get buy-in from the University Facility Department, Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Management Department, the Office of Campus Planning, and the Office of Environmental Sustainability.

Jim Lowe, PE, Director of Engineering, Construction, and Operations, at Ball State University will discuss the college's conversion of its campus from a coal-fired steam boiler district heating system to a ground source geothermal district system that simultaneously produces hot water for heating and chilled water for cooling. This system will include the installation of 3,600 vertical closed loop boreholes making it the largest ground source geothermal district system in the country. Jim will discuss the current heating and cooling operation and explain how the new geothermal heating and cooling system is being implemented. Dr. Thomas P. Ballestero, PE, of the University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center will discuss how porous pavements are being recognized as an innovative stormwater management strategy. Porous asphalt pavement design will be described for sites with high to low native soil infiltration rates, as well as cold weather performance. Case studies will be presented for parking lot and road applications.
Dr. Ballestero is Co-Principal Investigator and Lead Scientist at the Stormwater Center, and Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the UNH. Dr. Ballestero is also the former Director of the New Hampshire Water Resources Research Center and is presently a commissioner for the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission.
